THE PROFESSION AND THE INSTITUTE
Plant pathology--the scientific study of plant diseases--is the "medical profession" of the plant world whose goal is the maintenance of plant health and efficiency. The control of plant diseases is essential to the efficient production of food for the world's population, as well as for production of fiber, lumber, pharmaceuticals and ornamentals. Plant pathology has its roots in the basic biological and physical sciences. Since plant disease is the result of unfavorable interaction of plants with living and nonliving agents, the understanding and control of plant diseases requires a knowledge of all these elements.
The plant pathologist must first understand the healthy plant--its anatomy and physiology, its heredity and its relationship to its environment. The pathologist must also understand the biotic causes of plant disease--fungi, bacteria, viruses, higher plants, and nematodes--and the interaction among plants and pathogens, as well as nonliving causes of disease such as nutrient deficiencies and toxic agents, including air pollutants, and climatic factors. The complexity of the interaction among these elements in the dynamic context of the environment makes the study of plant diseases an exciting undertaking.
